Natasha Desai is a Dubai-based mosaic artist and the first to bring the Picassiette mosaic technique to the United Arab Emirates. She creates bespoke mosaic commissions and teaches progressive mosaic workshops for adults and children from her Dubai studio, working in stained glass, glass tiles, smalti, stone, wood and metal.
Mosaic art requires patience, dedication and a mind which is open to experimentation. There are no boundaries for a mosaic artist when choosing the tesserae or the substrate. The metamorphosis from start to finish of a mosaic project is magical. It's a bit like polishing a raw piece of carbon, arduous but extremely rewarding.
My strength is my versatility. I use glass tiles, stained glass, smalti, stones, wood and metal to design my pieces. I have not restricted myself to any one form of mosaic — I have done traditional borders for tables, flora, portraits, abstracts and many more styles. I continue to diversify my subject range to push the boundaries of what I can communicate through my art.
Imprints by Natasha was a concept I came up with in 2016 to promote mosaic art in this region. It was not until 2020 that I started conducting progressive mosaic workshops in Dubai for adults and children. I have kits that avid mosaic lovers can buy and work in the comfort of their home and in their own time. I also organize wellness workshops and am looking into organizing corporate team building events. I continue to make my own art that is sold around the world and undertake private commissions for clients.
